Chicago Marathon Training 08

Hello to all of you training for the Chicago Marathon. It has been a great summer so far to train for a Fall marathon but what do I know I'm not running the marathon this year. My friend and co-worker Pam is again training for her fourth Chicago so I get updates daily and sometimes hourly on her training program.

I thought I would set up this Post so others like Pam could talk about upcoming training runs and share tips on training for a marathon. This way I won't be the only one to hear Pam's stories about her long runs. Unfortunately I can't share these stories because Pam's motto is "what happens on a long run stays on a long run". I have been told there is a 18 mile training run starting at 6:00am from Panera Bread West this Sat. August 2nd. The route will have some stops along the way for water and bathrooms but I would recommend a fuel belt and GU if you have some.

Please start posting to this site to keep up on the group runs and everybody's progress.

Thanks Russ, even though your not running these days, we still can use your posting skills. Thanks for the site. Mary F. I lost your number but I hope Sat. works for you and your co-runners. Tim Mu... still in? No curb jumping this time! Pray for some cool weather.

Hey all - I'm in the Ozarks this weekend, but will join you for part of your runs starting the 9th.

BY THE WAY - If you haven't signed up for the Parade Run for Aug 7th, the early bird registration ends this Friday! It'll be just like the Chicago Meltdown, but with water, oh, and wait, without 24.2 of the miles. LOL......

see y'all!
Great job out there - geez, you guys are awesome!

Does anyone have a map of the 18 mile run this saturday?

Wow, 18 miles (gulp)! Good luck to you all hard core runners.

Kim & Pam, I'm ready for 18 on Sat. Starting at 6 we should be done just before 9 so that should be before the heat builds up too bad.(humidity might be bad though). Do you two have a certain route or are we just gonna wing it?
Tim Mu

P.S. My curb jumping is in my past, I hope.

Hey Mary, My folks are in the Ozarks also. I love the names of some of the restaurants: Half Sauced Barbecue, Peckers& the best.....Big Dicks Half Way Inn. Not sure that sounds like a real good place to eat! LOL

See ya Sat.

Kim, What is going on with your mind? Are you subliminally trying to say something? :P

Thursday 7/31/08 page C4 of St. louis post dispatch is an interesting article. They are having a naked bike ride next saturday in St. louis for ten miles. It starts at 9pm so guess you don't need sunscreen but mosquito repellent is probably a good idea.

Hey Chuck, I didn't name it! Just caught my eye while I was in the Ozarks a couple of weeks ago and thumbing through the yellow pages for a 'family' restaurant. Needless to say we skipped that one! Thought it was funny though, So sorry... no hidden message here!

Hey, I went to Dick's half way Inn and had a blast! I ate a minnow in a shot glass and won a free t-shirt. I wore the t-shirt for a month without realizing it was a drawing of a man, made out of a penis!!! lol.

I'm looking at the routes right now for the Sat. 18 miler. I'll post it when I figure it out. I would like to do Bunn and somehow get to Lincoln park and then back to Panera. I'll figure something out. Need plenty of restrooms and water stops.

Okay, I made the route for the 18 miler in USATF running routes. It hits all three parks for bathroom breaks and water. We can adjust as we go for traffic or anything else. We will hit Bunn, Lincoln Park, Washington Park and Schnuk's for restroom and water. One problem though, I don't know how to add it to this blog, lol. Need some help here. I saved the run under "Hit 3 parks" it's a little over 18 miles.

A minnow in a shot glass??? Yuck!! You are a women with many talents-lol. Thanks for routing the run. Hope we get a good turn out.

Chazter said...

Pam, you wore that t-shirt for a month? Boy, I guess when you like a shirt, you really like a shirt a lot. I bet you were pretty popular with that shirt on.

Pam and Kim, now I know how those business stay in operation. They sure encourage the women to come in for a drink or two..three, then a shot.

Anonymous said...

Chuck, actually I wore the penis shirt a couple times at the Fitclub and wondered why people were laughing at me and giving me odd looks. I just thought they were making fun of me because the shirt was cotton and not drifit, lol. I really didn't notice the guy was a penis. I did wonder why his nose was so big though (His head was the balls and his nose was the penis, sorry this is getting rated R or X.)

See everyone tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. sharp, ready to run. Glad it's going to rain tonight to make it a little less humid tomorrow.

We have GOT to come up with an award for "Comments Board Quote of the Year," and Pam has already won.

I really didn't notice the guy was a penis.

We won't ask who pointed out the obvious to you, Pam.

Ok guys - lay off my running partner will ya? I think you boys are just a little disappointed that you weren't asked to be poster boys for the restaurant. LOL :)

I know, I know, you can't take me anywhere! A lady at the Fitclub stated to me "I can't believe you are wearing that shirt" I'm like "Oh, don't you think it's cute" and she said "no, not exactly" lol. Then I looked at it again in the mirror and realized what was on there.

Had a terrible run for the 18 miler and want to throw in the towel for the marathon. I think passing out the water and cheering sounds a lot better than running 26.2. Kari did awesome! You go girl, you kept it strong. Tim, you ran like a bat out of hell after Lincoln Park. Did you make it to the car races?

Pamela

Kari F said...

Oh no you don't Pam!! Don't you give up!! Everyone has 'bad' runs now and again.. and besides, your 'bad' run is still better than a good run for me (and for a lot of people)any day!! Just shrug it off and think 'better luck next time!" And you do have plenty of time for Chicago..
Thanks for letting me join you guys Saturday!

Kari is right Pam, after a 5 month layoff to be back to 18 miles this soon could be a reason the run didn't go like you wanted it to. But don't give up have some beer and a Tombstone and all will be good with the world. I surprised myself at how fast I was able to run from Lincoln park back to Panera. Maybe a time deadline is what I need all the time.
Sprint car races didn't go very well; Chris flipped the car on the 2nd lap of his heat race' he was ok but car was done for the night. About 5 miles from Mt.Pulaski at three in the morning the biggest buck I've ever seen tried to see how good the brakes are on our hauler(R.I.P.mister deer).Slight damage to the front bumper, and maybe it wouldn't hurt

to adjust the brakes. 30 plus years of truck driving and that is my first deer.
Pam I need to know how many miles you and Kim ended up with, my garmin got turned off for a few miles I think. I'm not working Tues. do you guys still do track at noon?
Tim MU

Anonymous said...

Hey Tim,

Sorry I couldn't keep up with ya. I think the heat got to me. You did great! We ended up doing exactly 18 mi. We were a little short so we had to run down Koke Mill for .6 of course Pam wouldn't let us cut it short by a second so she watched her garmin until 18 and then we hobbled to the grassy area and pretty much bitched for about 20 min. how awful it was. I am fine now but am not running in this heat. Pam & I are skipping the speed workout and maybe doing it inside on a treadmill.

Stay cool! I hope your truck has good air cond.

Kim

Kari F said...

Hey Kim and Pam,
I had the same thought.. running inside today.. if your treadmill workout is around noon at FitClub South, I'll probably see you guys there

Is anyone running a long distance run this weekend? Is it at 6am from Panera?

Anonymous said...

Sorry, it is our cutback week so we are scheduling it through the week to free up our weekend.

Thanks for the support, Kari and Tim, I needed it. I decided to just run 4, 4, swim and then rest for two days then do my 10 and see how things go. I'm glad that this is a low mile week or I don't think I could have made it through. Tim, maybe you should plan some car races shortly after your Chicago marathon so you can break 4 hours, geeze the way you were running after Lincoln Park, I think you could get a 3:30! You actually were a bat out of hell. The other guy said he couldn't keep up with you so he decided to stay back with me. Can't believe you hit a deer after 30 years of trucking, that must of scared the bejebies out of you.

For everyone that is planning on running Abe's and also has a long run the same weekend, we are planning a long run the Thursday before Abe's. This will be on the 14th, we are planning on running 19/20 from Panera at 6:00a.m. so if you have to work, just take a day off like me and get it out of the way. We are planning on running the trail. I only plan on running the trail one time and one time only. I hate the trail, extremely boring but there isn't any traffic so I think at this time, it's best we run it. Everyone and their monkey's uncle is invited, the more people we have running the better for everyone since everyone has different paces.

Hey Pam, I am the other guy. Tim was running great back to Panera. You girls did a great job last weekend. Last weekend's course was great. Bunn Golf Course and the Nelson Center worked out great for water stops. It looks like the weather this weekend is going to great. I need to do another long run 19-20 miles on Saturday. I haven't decided on the course. Is anyone running long Saturday morning around 5:30 or 6:00?

Thursday the 14th eh? I might join you guys.. My usual running group is going to be doing Abe's so they probably won't be running the day before and I don't think there's any way I can get through 20 totally by myself.. I'll let you know!

Chazter said...

Kim,
You can do it.
Its so easy even a Caveman can do it.

Anonymous said...

Kari, take the day off, you have plenty of vacation days, what else are you going to do with them, take a vacation? lol. You can get the long run out of the way and still run Abe's. Kill two birds with one stone, lol. You don't want to run the 20 alone. Maybe Mary F. will join us also, everyone is welcome, even the "other guy", lol. Oh, "other guy" I plan on running only 10 miles on Sat. or Sun. depending on my vodka and lemonade schedule. Next week, is our 20 mile run so you can join us on Thursday if you want. We have back to back long runs so I think we will probably run another 20 the next Sat. after that. We will keep everyone posted on the schedule. As for anyone else running a 20 miler this weekend, I don't know of anyone but I'm sure someone has a long run planned. Try the other group that is posted above this one, they will probably have a long run planned.

Hey, Chuck, how do you attach a picture to the blog. I have my memory card installed on my computer but I don't know how to attach the picture.

Kari,

This post is buried!I need your email again so we can communicate. Pam is having calf issues and is being smart and skipping the 20 mile this Thurs. So I decided to do the same and pick up the 20 next weekend. Thought we might join the other new group who is running long so we have more numbers. my email is" kimnoonan1@comcast.net Let me know your schedule.

Kim

PS. We are meeting at Xocho on Thurs around 5:30. Please join if you can!! The margaritas are cheap and the food is decent!

:)

Kari F said...

Hey Kim

Thanks for the heads up about the run and for the marg invite.. Ya know, I think I can skip my sons' football practice once and come for a margarita or two or three or........
I'll email you....

Anonymous said...

Great! Love to talk marathon over a margarita or as you say... one, two or three. Careful though, Pam and I closed the place down a few weeks back. Lights off and floors being swept. Yikes~

Kim

Chazter said...

Who is all going to Margarita night? Will you be around after 7pm? I may need some food after my workout and may stop on by. I assume Xochi on the westside?

Anonymous said...

Some girlfriends and I are planning on being there around 5:30 and will most likely still be there later than 7pm considering we closed the place down last time.

Pam said Mary R. is also going with some folks and they are always there late also. Think it is the cheap margaritas or just good company?? No Chuck, I DID NOT SAY' good margaritas and cheap company!

See ya there.

Kim & Pam you really let me down. I busted my butt to get home from Junction City, Kansas (462 miles) last night. I was all set to run 20 miles this morning but when I saw you guys were skipping it I just slept in this morning.
Pam is having calf trouble; didn't know she had any livestock. Tim MU

Your funny Tim. I guess I should proof my spelling after I type huh? Sorry we let you down with the 20mi. We are def. running it next Sat. morning. R U in?

I guess I'm officially a cow!!! Tim, sorry about that but I just couldn't run or my calve would have busted right out of my skin, lol. We are definately running 20 on the 23rd. I'm just going to have to run/walk the end if I have to. We'll post where we are running from soon, I think we may run at 5:30 a.m. because it's suppose to start warming up this weekend.

Pam you are going to find this hard to believe but I'm getting a hair cut Sat. morning, but not until 8:30. I may start as early as 5am and catch up with the rest of you no matter if you start at 5:30 or 6:00. That is if you start from Panera.

Tim, where you starting? I've got a 20 on the schedule as well for Sat.
Steve

I think we are going to start at Panera at 5:30 and do the dreaded trail. We can take the neighborhood to the trail and back so it won't be as bad as just doing the trail there and back. I'll see if Kim would like to change the route. I think Kari F. is running with us also. We'll meet at Panera at 5:30 and just run whatever route that comes to mind, lol.

Anonymous said...

Hey, Let's just join the other group and make life easier for ourselves! They are starting at 5:30 a.m. from Panera West, so we can all run together :).

I hope this post is still being visited by those running Chicago. Pam and I are putting together a hospitality team to utilize the hospitality tent. This entails cont. breakfast before race, changing station, porta johns. After the race food, beer, comp. massage will be provided. All for $60 per person - max 6 people. We currently have 3 confirmed and need 3 others. Please let me know if you wish to sign up. We will need payment soon as the tent will soon fill. Any further details see the Chicago Marathon web site.
