Your thoughts for '08 Half Wits out-of-town race?

OK, now that Madison is behind us, I thought it would be good to get people's input for our out-of-town race for 2008.

The Lincoln Memorial Half Marathon (keep a look out for our new website in the next couple months!) is April 5, 2008. Many of us run St. Louis, but it is the day after the LM next year, so that really puts a damper on STL.

I know a lot of people enjoy Indy, and it is a great race, but I also think it is fun to try new races...that's why we went with Madison this year.

So, I would like to get some thoughts from the Half Wits on where they would like to go next year. It is probably best to keep it in this region of the country (within a day's drive) and the time frame is mid-April though the end of May.

I would also like to know your thoughts on the possibility of traveling as a group via a bus rental. If there is enough interest in doing something like that, I would be happy to look into it.

Below I have listed the races I am leaning towards (in order). These are just my thoughts, and would like to run these largely because I have never done them before. But I really want to know what folks think about these and other spring half marathons. It would be a blast to have a huge group of Half Wits at one of the race...just like Indy last year.

A very good site to find half marathon races is www.Half2Run.com It lists halfs by region.

Here's my list. Each of the races is hyper linked to the race website so you can check them out...

1. Oklahoma City Sunday, April 27, 2008

2. Louisville Kentucky Derby Saturday, April 26, 2008

3. Cincinnati Flying Pig Sunday, May 4, 2008

4. Columbus LaSalle Bank Saturday, April 19, 2008

Other spring half marathons include Nashville (April 26, 2008); Indy (May 3, 2008); Madison (May 25, 2008); Green Bay (May 18, 2008) among others.

If you have ideas on other races, let us know. If you have thoughts on any of these, as well as the idea of a bus trip, let us know.

I think Oklahoma City would be very cool. It starts and finishes at the OKC memorial and it is run in honor of all the victims of that terrible tragedy. OKC has done a ton of redevelopment work to their downtown. It is a very cool place and a fun town

But let's hear your thoughts!

I think the pig with wings is really cute so I vote for the flying pig. Cute little pig t-shirts and medals, lol.

Hey Tim, you were suppose to make me a "contributor". What do I have to do, pay money? lol. Russ and I are going to set up some runs for the people that are training for Chicago or any other fall marathon. I guess we are going to run the long runs on Sat. at 6:30 a.m. because of the heat. I'd rather run later but I was out voted. We are going to start with 10 miles and work our way up. Some cut back weeks but I really think the plan will work. Everyone is welcome, the more the merrier!!!!!! Even if you're not training for a marathon, you can cut back on some of the mileage.

Tim, can we borrow a water jug to set up along the way?

Did I hear you accuse Barry of being a blow hard?

Loved Indy and Madison. The Flying Pig is one that I've heard a lot about, it might be fun.

I think a bus trip would be fun. Since my wife doesn't run nor understand the logic of having a beer and bagel at 9:00am after "enjoying" a 13.1 mile stroll. I think to make it really successful we would have to get everyone booked in the same hotel or at least ones in close walking distance. I don't know how difficult that would be to organize.

Pam,
I would like to hook up with people for some marathon training. At least for some of the runs. I'll be training using a heart rate monitor so my pace will be down around 8:30-8:45/ mile. Keep me informed. Maybe we can get it a little more organized.

The Flying Pig is a lot of fun. That is where I ran my first half. That is also where my husband found out he had a stress fracture in his hip-(needless to say his slowest race ever, and not his favorite place). I would love to go back. I remember it being hilly tho. That's ok. Love those hills. Oklahoma City would be great too. Probably a very moving experience.--

Pam; I'll be there for those Sat. runs in prep. for Chgo. I am with you. I would like to start later too, just because I love to sleep. But, I do want to get done before the heat. Also, running early allows me to get it done and the kids are just getting up when I get home.

Me, accuse Barry of being a blow hard? I don't even know what a blow hard is. Do I really want to find out? lol.

Roger, I'm sure we can find someone at an 8:30/8:45 pace. I wish I could run that pace with ya but I'm a little slower than that. I think I'm going to try 8:45/9:00, more closer to the 9:00 than 8:45. Russ is trying to whip into shape so I really think he will be able to hold your pace once he stops smoking!(Hope he reads that)hehehe.

Deb, I ran today and thought I better start running at 6:30 because it was so darn humid. I ran out of water so I was trying to take little sips at a time. I didn't want to wear my fuelbelt because I thought, it was just 10 miles. Sure would have liked to had another bottle of water. Just thought I would be able to sleep in one last Sat. until Oct. 14th. If we run at 6:30, we will be done by 9:30 or 10:00, on our longest runs. You're also right about the kids. Mine will be just done with watching cartoons.

Tim, with you guys training for a half this fall, maybe on our short runs, in between our long runs, both groups can hook up. The short runs will be 12 miles so that should be around where you guys will be. Just a thought.

Jennifer, are you still out there? Where's crazy racing Tim? Probably at another race somewhere.

Can't shut me up, the bus sounds great!

I have done the Flying Pig marathon and Louisville marathon runs. Both bring me distinctive memories. Flying Pig was hilly and it rained all throughout the race. Louisville was hilly too. Both races I ended up muscle cramping at midway point somewhere between 12-14 miles. So my running adventures there havent been pleasant, but I am willing to do the half races instead. I am all up for having fun.

The big draw for Louisville is that you also get to run around the track too. Hmmm, first Indy and now Churchill Downs.

Whichever sounds great to me.

BTW, bus trip would be fun. I assume traveling the night before the race, staying at a hotel and coming back the day of the race (will there be time to celebrate)?

Whats more fun than a running Half Wit...a road-tripping Half Wit!

You all are so fun!! I am in for a bus trip and hotel stay. I would enjoy any race- the pig, OK city, or the track. The road-trippin sounds like a great idea and maybe a tradition we could start. It will keep us all motivated to work together and have fun.

My first marathon was The Kentucky Derby Marathon. It was so beautiful. The first 6 miles is through a park going up/down a mountain. Really it was a mountain! It is actually a lot easier than it sounds... It is VERY gradual; You don't even realize that you are going up a mountain and just ran that high of elevation! After that, you bet on the horses while running through Churchill Downs, go thru another very scenic park, run past Louisville Slugger, then finish downtown and drink some mint juleps! Awesome race!!! This race is a week before the Kentucky Derby horse race, therefore it draws a lot of spectators. The crowds are so supportive!!! They love the race!!!

Don't let the hills intimidate you... Yes it is very very very hilly. For those that did St. Louis, you know THAT was F&*%$#@ hilly!!! Meaning St. Louis had loooooooooonger painful hills. KY Derby just has more hills, but not so loooooong hills. (Does that make sense?)

A road trip sounds COMPLETELY awesome!! GREAT IDEA Tim!!! But if we were to do something like that, I would want to make our time worthwhile. The big picture of a "BUS TRIP" would be:
***Leave on Friday, do a Saturday race, then PARTY PARTY PARTY with everyone that Saturday night, then go home on Sunday!!***
Last year at Indy was a BLAST because it was a Saturday race. :)

Sunday race... UGH!!! (Picture this....) Travel, REST, can't drink the whole weekend, run then GO HOME... HO HUM... waste of time and money... no fun...

Let's make our time together worth while and full of memories!!! THAT would be my ideal trip with everyone!!! KY Derby, Columbus and Nashville are all Saturday races, so how about voting for any of those???? :):):)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BTW, Tropical Storm Barry... How scary! :-O It will definitely turn into a hurricane now!!!!
Anonymous said...
I love the idea of a bus trip.. and Emily K. had a good point about doing a Saturday race.. who wants to turn around and have to go home right after??!! Not me! That's what was so fun about Indy being able to party all afternoon.. get a short nap and then party that night. SOOOO.. I'm in for a Saturday 1/2... Kathy H. did Lousiville and is wanting our group to do it with her next year so that would be my vote.. Louisville! But we're flexible!!
Emily, okay, I won't let the hills intimidate me but a "mountain" cripes! Tim M. will love to do it, he always says he doesn't have a problem with hills.
Blowhard Barry, now I know what your talking about. Geeze, takes me a while.
Pam, you are soooooo quick!
Barry has already been downgraded to a tropical depression, a phrase that always makes me think of a sad-looking guy slumped over on a beach . . . .
I have a buddy who lives in Columbus and he keeps asking me when I'm going to run that marathon.
Anonymous said...
Yeah Barry! I think you're due for a marathon since you're now up to 4:45 pace/mile
I hate to change the subject, but did anyone else that ran in Jacksonville yesterday see a differance in the finishing times that were on the web site as opposed to your own watch times. My time was listed 40 seconds slower than my watch time. Of all the races I've ran my own time is only one or two seconds off the posted times. One gal that won her age group was also surprised by the time that was annouced for her because her mother had taken a picture of her at the finish and the clock showed a several seconds faster time than she was credited for. I am just curious if this happened to anyone else. For a half or full marathon for next year I vote for Louisville or Oky City. For all that were there in Jville and ran their butts off yesterday, thanks for letting me vent my frustration about the timing and scoring of the race. Tim Mu
Em:
4:45 per mile???
Whatever you're taking, can I have some?
:)
Barry House said...
Hey Tim Mu,
Passavant did the same thing to me--my watch read 57:08 and I swear I heard one of the ladies at the finish SAY that time out loud, but the official results have me at 57:41.
Just one more reason why I probably won't be going back.
Anonymous said...
I was not at the race but heard that although Joy won overall in the womens, they at first didn't have her announced winning at all?
Aaron said...
At least you were listed in the overall results. I finished the 10k right behind our club president, Mr. Cinotto, and I'm not even listed as a finisher in any race. I ran 42:15 but I'm not Bob Thompson. From what I hear Joe Thiel won the 10k race but they didn't list him as the winner initially and had to go back through the results after they realized that they had a glitch with the women's results. I guess that everyone who registered the day of the race was put in the 5k pool if they were put into anything at all. I've looked through the results and can't even find my bib # 256.
Anonymous said...
Aaron is now in the results. There are still problems with the results though. It looks (right now) that everyone in the male results from Aaron Sarff can move their times up by 2 spots. The female results need some adjustments also, but hope that the times and places finally got squared away. Any one want to score a race? Not as easy as it seems. So Tim, Barry & Aaron check your times by moving up 2 places for your corrct time. This may change if the results get fixed, but you know your time. Good job by all of you. Good luck Mr. Cooper if things stay the same.
Pam, You are way toooooo funny!!! How about I'll say it is an EXTRA EXTRA large "hill". That sounds better right? :):):):)
I was wondering if anyone knows how to travel to the Boston marathon w/o spending a crap-load of $$ on the trip. I was all excited about setting up the trip and quickly realized that it will be way more than our budget wants to allow for a race. Are there any suggestions from those of you who have traveled to Boston or even any other large, far away marathon? Thanks!
Aaron said...
I had the results e-mailed to me by the race director and I am indeed in there now. Scoring a race sucks, when I was in college I would volunteer at the regional and sectional cross country meets when they were in my hometown. 150 runners in each race makes for 150 chances that something is going to go wrong. I'm glad everything is straightened out and I'm impressed with the response time. I'll be back next year.
Anonymous said...
Joy, you can wait 30 years until I make it to Boston. I will travel with you and be your roomie. Mary and I are going to go when we turn 70 so you can hook up with us then, lol.
Maybe you can find out who is going next year and carpool. How long does it take to drive there? Ask Ali, he just got back from there. Hope you can find a way that isn't too expensive to go.
Joy, Or ask Tim Marker what his plans are? His time was really slow like yours... 3 hours, I think...? :):)
Debi could probably give you suggestions too? :)
Thanks guys! My husband was freakin about paying for airfair and a room-he didn't want to go if it cost that much. I'll figure something out, but if anyone else has any ideas let me know.
Hey everyone, on the SRRC website they state there is a SRRC marathon training group. They are starting this Sat. at 7:00 a.m. Does anyone know anything about it? Maybe we should join that group. Does anyone know who is organizing it so we can call them? This is the first I've heard of it.
Tim, this is Steve.
You doing Grandmas in Duluth, or is your June marathon in Iowa?
Let me know if you get a chance.
Good running last weekend!
Pam; I saw that. I wonder who it is. Tim Butler, do you know?
Pam,
You are already used to running at 6:30 right? Nice try to get that extra 30 minutes. ;-)
Hey Pam - thanks for remembering we're gonna be roomies! I've got the poster hanging in my cube - dreams keep me going! Hmm - we could line up our walkers at the starting line! And we really CAN drink margarita's before we run, 'cause we'll certainly have earned it!
Okay - maybe I should just concentrate on hitting 4:30 in Chi Town, huh! We all have dreams....and lots of miles to go until then!
btw - any spring half will do (and the bus trip really sounds great)!
btw - again (been awhile since I've chimed in) - volunteer for the biathlon - my kids and I need all the support we can get - don't get us lost!
Pam,
When I was talking w/ Jim Cinotto yesterday, he is looking for someone to officially lead the SRRC marathon training group. He said he was going to show up on Saturday as he was the one who put the training schedule in the last Foot Trails. If anyone is interested in leading this group, then contact Jim.
Okay guys, some of us are planning to run the half wits 10 miler from Panera on Sat. at 6:30 a.m.!!!! You are right Chuck, I tried my darnest to start at 7:00, to get 30 min. more of sleep but I lost again. Bring fuelbelts because we don't have the water jugs yet. We'll get them by the time we get to our 14+ milers. I tried to cut and paste the map so you can see the course.
Tim, John and Steve, looks like we won't see you until after the grandma marathon, so Good Luck. I hope you have great weather and lots of hill since you like them so much. Remember to count down races from 20 miles. At 20, think, "I just have an Abe's to go, at 23, "I just have a jingle bell to go" and so on and so forth. It will help. Don't forget to eat your tombstone and have lots of beers the night before the race, hehehe.
