Fall for the Half Wits!!!

Here's the plan for the St. Charles half this fall...and I think race organizers are thinking about some kind of running club gathering spot in the post-race area!

We are planning a late summer/early fall “mini” version of the Half Wits in advance of the Lewis & Clark Half Marathon in St. Charles, MO on Sunday, September 16.

The Lewis & Clark Half Marathon is a great race which has seen tremendous growth since their inaugural race in 2002. Due to this growth, the race directors have created a new point-to-point course this year that runs from Riverport amphitheater to historic downtown St. Charles including a jaunt across the Missouri River on the Route 370 bridge.

This six week Half Wits plan will start on Saturday, August 4. We’ll do runs of 10 miles ( 8/4/07 ), 11 miles ( 8/11/07 ), 6.2 miles (Abe’s Amble, 8/19/07 ), 12 miles ( 8/25/07 ), 13.1 miles (LM course 9/1/07 ), 7 miles ( 9/8/07 ), and race day ( 9/16/07 ).

We’ll also change the venue for the fall Half Wits. We’ll meet on Saturday mornings, 6:30 a.m. on the south side of the Old State Capitol Plaza ( Adams Street between 5th & 6th). We’ll run routes through downtown and probably incorporating Washington and/or Lincoln Parks . Afterwards, we’ll convene at a new downtown restaurant, Café Moxo, which has good coffee and serves breakfast. Café Moxo is on Adams between 4th and 5th streets. We can also peruse the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market after the run.

Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

This would also coincide with the Dacatur Shoreline 5K/15K on September 16th.

I think the Shoreline is actually Saturday, Sept. 15, but yep, we always have conflicts with a couple of our out-of-town SRRC races.

Indy is always the same day as the Lake Run and we have had some huge Springfield crowds at Indy the past few years.

And Shoreline seems to always be the same weekend as Lewis and Clark.

So many choices for good races:-)

Hey Tim - did we ever come to a consensus on the Spring event? Some of us are interested in Flying Pig - what's your thoughts?

It's still open to comments, but we seem to be leaning heavily to the Pig...even though it is a Sunday.

The RRCA convention will also be in Cincinnatti at the same time as the 2008 Pig.

Oink, oink!

Sunday race? Ho Hum... How could we all REALLY "enjoy" the weekend together? Not that alcohol is a factor, but when could we REALLY celebrate our accomplishments?

It has also been discussed in Saturday group runs that it would not be as much fun if we'd had to drive HOURS home after doing a Sunday race. Not everyone will want to take a Monday off since it is the beginning of a work week.

I am still in favor for a Saturday race... especially if we really do a group bus trip, block rooms at a hotel, the whole sha~bang! :) I really think you'd get more people to go if it was a Saturday race.

Other people have said that they'd much rather take a Friday off, drive to the destined race site, race Saturday, REST after the race, then meet everyone OUT for an evening of fun on that Saturday night! Then when Sunday comes, we can all "take our time" to go home... Not that I am voting for Indy, but Indy is a GREAT example for Saturday races. Everyone like myself, have said how much of a BLAST they had there!

Tim, you and Wendy did SUCH a GREAT job organizing the SRRC party tent last year in Indy. And boy oh boy the FUN we had at that tent! That tent brought all of us together! We had coolers and coolers of alcohol in there!! Remember how of ALL of the tents there, we were the ONLY tent still standing and partying?! There was NOBODY there but us SRRC people! It was what??? 3-4 hours after the race that we were still there???? We were there so long that Sanya was able to go back to her hotel, shower, come back and party more! :)Oh! And you had mentioned in the last blog about all of us doing aerial shots of vodka/lemonade out of the water coolers... I was the one taking the pictures... they are sooooo hilarious!!! :):):) Then we had Jan W. leading a group of us doing yoga asanas. I think she even had Bob Thompson doing yoga! Then was it Connie and Linda J. being pulled around in a kiddy wagon? I think there were people taking turns being pulled in that wagon! :) Do you really think we could do all of that again if we did a Sunday race?

Oh Timmmmmmmmmmmm!!!! It just makes more sense!!! :):):) I think even BARRY would come if it was a Saturday race! Not even him would want to miss all of thiiiissss!! :)

(Yes, I am WHINING!!!)

OH~~ BTW, my comment above has NOTHING to do with the Lewis and Clark half marathon training. I think the L&C 1/2 is a GREAT idea!!!!

Thank you Tim and Wendy for always thinking of GREAT ideas and organizing this training!!! There are NEW Abe's Army recruits that are not ready for a marathon therefore very interested in training for this!

Awesome!! I had signed up for L and C right after Indy and thought I would be there alone! It will be great to have a group to train with! I am especially interested in the new venue downtown. What a cool idea!! Love the trails, but change is good. Thanks Butlers for once again organizing a great group!!

I had no idea there were so many people wanting to do the Pig! I thought I was alone on that one, too! Looking at the course, its uphill for three miles! YIKES! I see an inclined treadmill in my future this winter!

Also, does anyone else know about the "Marathon Hotel Guide" website?? I found this yesterday and I wish I had thought of it. It lists upcoming marathons and then links to a map page showing the location of all the hotels in the area (these are hotlinked) AND tips and tricks on getting to and from hotels to staging areas, directions, general race info, etc. Many of the things I spend time hunting down when deciding where my next races will be. They have all those type of answers in one place. You can link to it from the Pig website under other links. Its pretty slick and a time saver!!

I wonder if Emily wants to run the pig marathon? I couldn't tell from her last comment, lol

Tim, we are going to incorporate some of the marathon training runs with your halfwit's runs. I think the change of routes will do us some good. Can't wait to try out the new coffee shop and Farmer's market. Are there bathroom's on the route? Just wanted to know, just in case.

Russ stated that he received your e-mail to be a contributor. He will forward it to me and I'll see if I get that one. Weird that I'm not getting yours. I looked in Spam and it wasn't there either, must be some kind of hang up or something.

Thanks,
Pamela

Tim,
I know you sent us HalfWits updates via the E-mail distro you have now and I did get the first Half Wits e-mail letter with your new format. Here is my stupid question, on the right side of this page, you have REGISTER FOR HALF WITS E-MAILS, I am assuming since I was on that distro list, I dont have to do it again?

Anonymous said...

Chuck:
If you try to register and you're already registered it just tells you that you're already registered and asks if you want to edit you profile.

Short answer: No. You need not register. But if you want to check your profile and change anything you can.

I had the same question, so I just tried it.

The Shoreline has officially been moved to Sunday the 16th, even though the magnets and schedule say the "15th".

Wendy B. Thanks for the answer. ;)

Chuck:

Yep, there is a little confusion over "registering" for the new e-mail. Hopefully this answers it:

My plan is to import all my Half Wits e-mail addresses (about 200) into the Constant Contact address book. This means, if you are already on the Half Wits list you won't have to register for the constant contact e-mails.

But, with this new feature, people who would like to sign up for Half Wits e-mails in the future(and soon to be LM e-mails) can do it on their own by using the link on the blog (or a forwarded e-mail) and without going through me.

The e-mail I sent yesterday was under the Constant Contact trial offer and it went to about 60 people. I wanted to see what the reaction was to it, but I have heard nothing but positive comments so I will probably import all the e-mails this week and go fully live with the new e-mails!

Ah, technology!

Pam,
Don't you read the newspaper. It says in the paper what everyone uses the downtown alleys for.

lol, I guess with it being so early, maybe nobody will notice. I better bring my toilet paper!

I feel the need return to the St. Charles Half, for some reason it was a tough race last year but we had a great time that weekend. I hear the course is improved.

Also anyone interested in bike rides we're riding at 5:30 pm from Panera on Monday's and Thursday's.
Is anyone doing the Flying Pig as a relay?
