Madison report

Sunday was a perfect morning for the race in Madison. It was clear with temps in the mid-50s and low humidity.

The start of the race is a wonderful setting adjacent to the Wisconsin State Capitol. Runners were bussed from the finish area to the start line. Once off the bus there was the usual throng of runners looking to use the port-a-johns or running into hotels to use the facilities.

The race started on time (about 20 minutes after the marathoners start), with two very large bottles (one ketchup and one mustard, click here for picture) running the half marathon!

The first mile was downhill and you take off through the neighborhood. Everyone then turns back towards the University of Wisconsin. We ran through the campus, had a very nice shaded stretch of running on a trail along the lake, around intramural fields and past Camp Randall Stadium. Then you take a lengthty jaunt up the Monroe Street hill (mmmm...that coffee smelled good at Ankora Roasters!). We turned down a hill just past Edgewood College then through a nice neighborhood. We wound our to the finish through neighborood and the last mile takes you through a park (open field) and eventually ending at the Alliant Energy Center.

There were great crowds along the course and with over 4000 participants in the various races, there were always runners around you but you were not too crowded.

The finisher's medals and t-shirts left a little to be desired, but all in all it was a great race and we would definitely go back.

And yes, we had a brat at Brat Fest after the race!

Congrats to Half Wit Bob Thompson on finishing third in his age group at this race! That's a great accomplishment for a race of this size.

Man, I knew Bob was improving on his times but to get third in his age group for a half marathon is fantastic! Was his medal better than the finisher's medals that you weren't impressed with? Hopefully, he got his picture with the mustard and cute ketchup.

I'm glad everyone had a good time. The brat fest is what I would have liked.

Wendy,
You are the one that intimidates us chicks on the roads~~~~ like me!!! I still look at my 2002 calendar daily at my first 5K race at Wash Park, Jingle Bell Run when I beat you by a tenth of second. I will always and remember and cherish that moment for life as it will NEVER happen again!!!

(I know~~~ I have a pretty sad life! My husband and children neglect me!) :)

Regardless, you could NEVER be chop liver!!! Just one fast cheetah!!!

If anyone wants to join in, I am planning on doing a 7.34 miler Saturday morning starting @ 7am from our house at 7am. We'll run to FitClub North and then through Indian Hills subdivision to the park there for water. From there head down Sangamon to the fairgrounds. Around the track and back out to Sangamon then back through Lincoln Park to our house.

Let me know if you planning to show up, otherwise I will head out promptly at 7am. It's easy to be on time when you just have to stumble out the door.

We are at 1638 N. Fifth Street. Corner of Ridgeley and 5th. Tan two story with green shutters.

There won't be any gatorade or anything out, but there's the water fountain at the park and they may have the water fountains turned on and bathrooms open at the fairgrounds. Not sure what time FitClub North opens.

Kim: That was my best time ever, it was great course and a fun city. Wendy passed me up way at the beginning. Way to go Wendy!!

Everyone should try and run Madison sometime. Also, Great Danes Brewery is good!

Yes, GREAT job to everyone that did any of the races up in Madison. The course was actually a little tougher that I expected. Could someone have mentioned that up north they call us "flat-landers" before the race? I naively went by the course description of "fairly flat". There were many up-hills, but I don't think I could have got my new PR without what seemed like equal if not more down-hills.

Hey, Emily...thanks for the compliment. Is it strange that I would be flattered by someone thinking that I my be on steroids? I know that it is safe to say this after reviewing the SRRC bylaws for "random" drug testing and coming up empty. Turns out low-grade beaver tranquillizers have the exact opposite effect when you're 20 times their size (if you've seen the movie Dodgeball, I hope you can appreciate that).

Just to quell the rumors and be fair and maintain my integrity, I will allow one person (of my choice) to do the surface steroid test that you proposed.

Again, GREAT JOB TO EVERYONE!!

My sis (who accidentially posted that last one anonymously) and I are doing a half in St. Louis on July 7th. Its the Joker's Wild Half Marathon and is supposed to be a really good time. Here is the website: http://www.ultramaxtri.com/
