Baby, it's cold outside!!!

Well...those hardy souls who ran the arctic amble last year remember this photo...and it looks like we have a good chance to get similar photos this weekend!

Saturday's forecast is for temps in the single digits during the morning with a stiff west wind. This promises that the wind chill will be well below zero!

Here are a few tips to handle the weather:

1. Get a face mask! A stocking cap alone just doesn't cut it in this weather. You also need a face mask to keep the frostbite away, especially if the wind will be kicking up. I would recommend a mask that covers your nose. The facemask will probably be a chunk of ice by the end of the run, but it certainly beats the alternative.

2. Get good gloves...or better yet, mittens. Good gloves are a must in this weather, and mittens are an even better alternative. Mittens allow the heat of your entire hand to help warm the inside "pocket" of the mittens, thereby keeping your fingers warmer than they can get in the individual fingers of a glove.

3. Wear thicker tights. There are wonderful options today in tights. You can wear a base layer of tights and then maybe another layer of looser tights or pants. I have a pair of fleece tights that I wear over regular tights in weather like this.

4. Layer, layer, layer...and make sure your layers (especially the base) are moisture wicking material. Fleece middle or outer layers work great. And a jacket that cuts the wind can be a lifesaver!

5. Bring a change of clothes for after the run! No matter how cold it is outside, I always sweat! And what I have learned is that it is very hard to heat up after a run in cold weather if you are sitting around in soaking clothes. Dry clothes will really help make you feel better.

6. Always remember...running in extremely cold weather is something that you can really brag about to your co-workers on Monday morning! "You did what on Saturday morning!? In that kind of weather!? You are nuts!". Just tell them, "nope, I am just a Half Wit!"

That pic send shivers to my whole body. But I am sure you all had fun running in the Arctic Fartlek last year. Some of us might experience it this week or Tues. Bundle up folks!

Hey, since we're all going to be out there in the arctic air anyway, is anyone interested in adding a couple miles to Saturday's run?

I'm interested. 3-4 more would be ideal. Will you be the leader Sat.?
If so, I'll go!

Anonymous and Barry-Man,

Um, I was really hoping to do 9, but we can talk over the details on Saturday morning.

Barry and Anonymous,
Jennifer and I are probably going to do about 9 or so, you can run with us. I haven't talked this out with Jennifer yet but if we keep going from the FitClub to Chatham road, I bet that would be about 9 miles. If we are short we can always add some mileage by running into Washington park.

Emily, I don't know the route you are going to run but if you keep going with us, you can run around the park two times and you'll probably come up with 15 or so. Just a thought, I don't want to step on Carl's turf if he already has a plan for the two of you, :}.

I think that sounds like a plan. You know Carl~~ he is not going to care. I'd love to join yas so we will plan on doing some with you!!
Thanks so much!!! :):):):)

Okay, I'll join the Carl/Em journey then. It's a bit more than the mileage on this week's program, but the low temps will keep us in check I bet. 7:30 start, right?

Anonymous,
What's your name so I know to look for you at 7:30? (I feel like this a blind date!) LOL!!!

I'm real easy to find~ other than my bro Chuck, i'm the other filipina~ :)

Barry? Ya gotta go now!

You may be easy to IDENTIFY, Emily, but in a crowd you are sometimes really difficult to FIND. Especially if the person looking for you is not looking down . . .

LOL!

I'll be there at 7:30 in my bright yellow jacket, which is way easy to find!

Barry - you're always easy to find - just look for the great big.....SMILE, and listen for footsteps! See you tomorrow - and I'm only doing the regular route - I'm supposed to be, uh, EASING back into all of this. It's just so hard with all you over achievers!

Look out everybody, MaryThon is back!

Yeah, just look for the great big fat guy in the yellow jacket, right? LOL! Great to know the good old days are back again, Mary.

For the record, some of us ain't over achievers. Some of us just need to log more miles than anyone else to achieve ANYTHING!

See ya Saturday morning, Mary!

tennis ball - don't forget :) (for balance - so I can run as well now as before the surgery!)

We're just going to have to turn you into Barrython!

The simplest acts of kindness mean the most, whether they come in the form of a smile, a high-five, encouragement on the road, or even a dirty old tennis ball.

It was a bitterly cold day to run, but I wouldn't have spent my morning any other way. The warmth of seeing the group working together towards their goals is simply amazing. It's great to be back with the HalfWits.

PS to Trisha, I am sooo proud of you!!!!!! Thanks for the company - it would have been tough without you.

And Barry - when the HECK did you get so dang FAST!!!!!!????????? Way to keep it strong.

See y'all next Saturday...

MaryThon, you're still healing from your surgery. I haven't gotten fast; you're just slower than you were.

Wow, it WAS great to have you back and to see so many Half Wits braving the cold today. But right now I'm looking forward to July!

Does anyone think that Tom looks like the mountain climber in the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer cartoon? Can't remember his name.
