Boy - you guys are nuts! I spent three hours cleaning up our yard, etc. today and I'm wiped out. It looks like a tornado went through the yard: there were huge limbs all over the yard - dang elm trees - what a mess!
Good luck running tomorrow and I hope to see you guys on Sunday for the FB.
Mary
Pam - got any good recipies? Got a bake sale coming up and I need ideas!
Pam, I am with you on the all day eat-fest. Yikes! Thanks for the invite, but no way can I do 6 yet. I'm sticking at 3 for another week before trying to increase. Believe me, 3 is still a challenge.
We got power around 9 this morning. Got pretty chilly at the house, but on the bright side, we don't have any trees yet to fall in the yard or on the house. Windows facing the north are completely exposed to the wide open fields and we had some leaking around the frames, carpet wet and all that. Hope everyone is OK and back to normal soon.
Good luck to everyone running FB tomorrow!!! I'll be thinking of you while I SHOP!!
The thing about that run in the snow, Mary dear, was that the air temp wasn't bad. All that snow melted pretty fast.
Tomorrow's temp at race time will be in the teens if we're lucky, so dress accordingly.
I did not run yesterday . . . training today by hauling heavy boxes of Christmas decorations out of the basement for my spouse. We'll if I have anything left for the hills tomorrow.
Mary, Can't give you any good recipes unless I get out the cookbook. I'll have to dust it off from the spider webs. If you want a good easy cookie recipe, I've got a perfect one. I used a chocolate chip cookie batter (in the tube) and added a rolo to it. They were so good I got first place in the cookie exchange last year. Everyone kept asking me how long it took me to cook them. I was so embarrassed because they were so easy and fast and everyone else spent hours making theirs and they didn't taste as good as mine.
I'm sorry to hear that your electric went out Jenni. We were very lucky this time and ours didn't go out at all. Mary, sorry to hear about all your limbs in your yard. We don't have tall trees so we were O.K. on that one also.
Have fun tomorrow at FB. I ran 7 miles today so I'm not running tomorrow.
I can't complain - my spouse was out delivering mail yesterday and today on country rural roads - He's not a happy camper, I can tell you that! He'll need to run the FB just to blow off steam!
I've got the limb pile still growing and there's some we're going ot have to break out the chain saw for.
But being snowed in yesterday had some advantages - got gifts wrapped and cards addressed and found recipe for Krushiki and Baklava. But pam - I'm doing the rolo thing - do you put them in before or after they're baked?
Hope your seven went well - we'll be all ready for 1/2 wits. I bought an early christmas gift - a trainer for my bike so I can ride indoors. Kinda like training wheels! Biking for Dummies 101!
Has anyone heard about the FB course - are they still doing the ten miler? Is the route even 1/2 way cleared yet?
So how were the roads for FB? Did everyone have fun?!
For the rolo cookies, you put the rolo in when the cookies are almost done. They melt real fast. If you want people to think you make homemade carmel instead of shoving a rolo in the cookie, just take a toothpick and swirl it around in the rolo, then it looks like homemade carmel, lol. I'm bad!
I'm off to my cookie exchange now! If there are any interesting cookies there, I'll post it.
Thanks Pam - and you should have run - they cancelled the ten and the the race became a matter of who could simply stay on their feet! I bet there are a few people who will be sore tomorrow between balancing on the ice and those who fell! It was fun - but cold. I didn't fall down (I'm kinda surprised), but I figure because I'm so short - my center of gravity is so low anyway!
Congrats to all those who finished on their feet - it was a crazy way to end the year. See you all later.
And Barry - thanks anyway for offering to be the 'dog whisperer' - I didn't see any dogs, well at least not the 4- legged variety!
Isn't this ice and snow beautiful! I know people think I'm crazy but I just love this stuff. I just don't like people getting hurt in it. The reason it snowed is Bob wanted to let people off for his birthday friday. The big 50! I haven't been running and I really miss it. My knee started hurting during marathon running and is worse now. It hurts not just running but all the time. I thought it would heal by now but I quess I need to see a doctor and see if it's more than tendinitis. Hey Kim, are you still having people over Sat. I miss you guys!
Well, I'm sorry that the weather sucked so bad here in Springfield, but down in Memphis Saturday it was a balmy 33 deg at race start for the St. Jude's Memphis Marathon. They had a record crowd of 8600 people doing all three races (5K, Half & Full). The wind (not much of it) was coming from the north-east so it was a cross-wind for much of the course. The sun came out from the clouds for the second half of the race and warmed things up a bit. I don't have pictures yet as we just got home and I checked the results.
My finish was 4:52:31, 10K 1:05:59, first half 2:19:02, 20 mile 3:39:06. Overall pace 11:10. I was trying to stay close to the 4:45 pacer but ended up passing her at 5 miles or so only to have her pass me late in the race. Overall a good experience, but the course was definitely hillier than I was led to believe. They said the second half was all down hill and I can emphatically say it was not down hill. There may have been a general trend of downhillness but there was still plenty of ups in the second half. By 24 I was done in and was fighting just to move forward. I spent the rest of the hills walking and could barely stand up to let them take the chip off my shoe. And of all the things to do to a MARATHONER after a race, you had to climb up STEPS to get out of the ball diamond to get to the food. I admit it was good to come running in the outfield of the ball diamond but trying to get up those steps after 26.2 miles of GENTLE ROLLING HILLS was pure torture. It was fun but I probably won't go back for a while. There are plenty of other races to try. Unless something drastic happens count me in for Chicago next year.

Anne - today was one of those days where it was all about just showing up! (But I kept wondering if there was another Mary Rogers - I was completely surprised today). In fact - look for an article later this month that I've started that is based on that very concept - "Sometimes You Just Gotta Show Up." There are a lot of us who participate in race after race after race - not to win an award or place anywhere near the top finishers in our age group, but just to be part of the experience of being with other runners in different conditions, It's persistance and the joy of just getting out there on our feet is what drives us to lace up our shoes. The award? Just a little icing on the cake for a wonderful year of races. It was definately a challenge today and I'm thrilled just to have been able to stay on my feet.
Great job to all of you - I can't believe how slick the roads were (there were people turning around to go back, people falling all over the place and drivers in cars irritated that we were "in the way"), but still the top finisher came in at like 11 minutes something - that is amazing! And the little kids were cool - they would fall but pop right back up! The only clear spot - besides Washington Street was a clear sidewalk in front of someone's house - glad I wasn't the only one shoveling snow yesterday!
So as I write this little article "Sometimes You Just Gotta Show Up" - I'd like to hear from you. Send me your ideas. What does it mean to be part of this community of runners? For those of us who never expect to be the top runners, why do you do what you do? Why do we race - why does it even matter? I'd love to hear what you have to say. Post here - or email me!
Best wishes and again, congrats to all the finishers! This race took a lot of guts or a very small random act of stupidity.
Jeremy WAY TO GO - SUPER COOL You are now part of an elite group of halfwitted idiots that run 26.2 miles just for fun. And Chicago will have a lot less downhillness and uphillness for that matter (well except for Mt. Rushmore at mile 26 - y'all remember THAT??)
I just sent you an email before I saw your post - rest up, relax, and be so very very proud of what you just accomplished. WHOOOO HOOOOOO! Be sure to post pics!
Welcome to the club, my man! You rock, you roll! What a great time, too! Pretty consistent all the way! Funny about the stairs at the end to get food. CRUEL. Brings back memories of Chicago. I could barely lift my legs to walk, and shaking so bad, I couldn't hold my coffee without spilling it all over my hand and arm, I still had to walk 7 blocks to the car. Shiny space blanket flapping all the way. Oh, the inhumanity!
This year's FB sounds like last year. I thought I was going to break a hip out there. That's when I started looking for the strap on cleats. Actually, they're not cleats, but more like snow tires for your shoes. Anyone seen them or tried them???
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOB!!! (Robin, I agree with you...if I had a $1 for every time I said "Isn't it pretty?", well, I could buy a tank of gas or something)
Pam, cool idea about the rolos. I did something similar, but with a square of Hershey's chocolate bar in the center. I put 'em on after they came out, tho. YUM! I had some old fashioned Gingerbread cookies this weekend to DIE FOR!! Little raisin buttons....Interested?
Congratulations Jeremy! It's something we will remember for a life time. I think the words Pride and Crazy go together when we say we ran a marathon. Congratulations Mary! You are like the Energizer Bunny, you just keep on going. I really admire you. Not only do you run but you have a great gift for words. Keep it up!
Congrats to all who ran Frostbite! We ran Sat. morn. instead. Was a nice run. Hey Robin, I would love to have you guys over. I think it will be a small group. Are you doing the wine tasting. Pam doesn't drink wine but is still going. Anyone interested in stopping by - it is Sat. Dec.9th 5-7pm. Call me for directions: 725-1004. I am only a mile from Corkscrew. Hope to see you all.
This should be a link to a Yahoo Photo Album with only a few pictures. I didn't concern myself with taking any and my wife is not really a photographer.
The guy walking next to me at the finish is actually my co-leader from Abes Army this year, Dave Drennan. He ran more than half of it with me and finished in 4:32 I think. Our other co-leader, Bill Davis was supposed to run it as well, but couldn't because he is recovering from surgery for Colon Cancer. I haven't heard how that went yet.
Very cook, Jeremy - great job out there. And I can't believe you're already deciding to do another - that rocks!
Thanks Robin, btw - remember that energizer bunny stop from Chicago? I never want to see another one of those again! I sure miss seeing you - gonna have to plan something soon.
Jeremy, You have to feel so complete that you have finished your marathon! It is definitely a feeling that can never be forgotten. What a cool medal! I am so happy for you and I loved your pictures! I bet your family is so proud of you as YOU DID SUCH AN AWESOME JOB!!!!!!!!!!! :):):):)
BTW, if I am right, by looking at your running graph, Memphis, (as well as anything in that area) isn't exactly a flat course!!!! WAY TO GO JEREMY!!!! Nothing like hitting the hills!!!! :):):):)
Congratulations on your marathon! Isn't it the best feeling ever to cross the finish line? The pictures were great too, you don't look like you just finished a marathon.
Mary R.- You are so right about showing up, but you did more than that at F.B. Great job!! Isnt' that a perfect way to end the running season! You are much braver than me taking on that ice. I can't wait to get outside and run, I'm getting tired of the treadmill. Did 6 miles Saturday on it, so boring! I can't wait to run with everyone soon. Hope the weather is good on Jan. 1st, would love to see everyone.
Mary F. - I CANNOT STAND THE FLIPPIN' TREADMILL - but I can't run or swim on my lunch this week so I'm headed to the gym tomorrow night to run the treadmill. Did 1/2 hour on the bike in the house tonight, but I'm telling you there is simply nothing better than hitting the road - who would have thought we'd ever say that? It may have been slick out there, but still a great feeling of accomplishment.
Good luck next weekend - I can't wait to hear how it goes for you - Vegas, baby!
Jeremy - cloud nine, huh! That is amazing with all those hills - Chicago will be just a walk in the park for you next year! Enjoy all the aches and pains this week - battle wounds: you've earned them well.
Mary
January 1st Washington Park - what time does everyone want to meet?
Thanks for all the comments. It was really a great feeling to finish it. The pictures I have don't do justice to the way I felt immediately afterwards. I spent a good 5 minutes down on the track just drinking water and trying to work up the courage to try the stairs. After a bowl of soup and a few pieces of orange I started feeling pretty nauseous and had to go sit down for a bit. The rest of the day I was just plain worn out. Any movement started me feeling queasy again and I didn't really feel good until the next day. But you all know all about the post marathon aches and queasiness.
I too get bored on the treadmill. There is a good article called Boredom Busters in Runners World. If you don't have, I will email you the schedule. It has a variety of workouts to mix it up. Also, Pam and I are running Sat. mornings if your interested. All is welcome.
Mary R.
Where did you get your bike attachement? I would love to have one for the winter riding since you can't really ride outdoors.
Jeremy.
Thanks for all the marathon details. I can't wait to experience first hand next year. Good Job!
I will try and get that emailed. Our computer is so messed up that sometimes it won't let me email. It is a real pain. If I can't send it then I will put on blog and bore everyone with the boredom buster. Are you doing the social Sat. at Corkscrew? I could bring it then. How about my house prior? Let me know. Hope to get some of us together beforehand.
If it's in this month's Runner's World - I'll get it posted to the blog later tonight.
Anonymous - don't think I don't know who you are - stop giving me grief. I know YOU haven't been running.
And Barry - your turn, baby - make it a Barrython!
Kim - I got it at bike nashbar online www.bikenashbar.com. It's an adjustable mag resistant trainer - easy to set up - no fancy bells and whistles, but for under $100 bucks it's going to keep me in the saddle. I won't be running until January due to a little medical issue, but I gotta keep these muscles strong! I'm off to the gym right now...
Here's the link and right now they are offering 20% off (check their home page for the coupon) MAGNETIC TRAINER
Okay for those of you looking for the article Kim reference regarding boredom busters, go to Runner's World Online and search for boredom busters in the search box. Besides that article - there are so many other really good articles that you might find interesting, especially if you don't get Runner's World in the mail.
Thanks Mary for the bike info and posting the Boredom Buster site. I am still having a struggle with this computer! Can't wait to get the techy to fix it.
Mary F, have fun in Vegas! That sound much more fun than my house.
Does anyone want to meet in Lincoln at 6:15 a.m. for a 6 mile run? Emily K. and I are running, and I met another girl from Emden who ran FB that is looking for someone close to her to run with - so she's running with us, too. Her name is Debbie Watts. Too far for all of you to drive? What's up with THAT??? Oh, wait, it's not ALL about me (right, Anonymous????)
Have a good weekend all of you - it's supposed to be better in terms of temperature outside, so there is no excuse - get off the couch, put the twinkies down and RUN!
My spouse has Saturday off, otherwise it would be soooo tempting to drive up to Lincoln and run with you ladies, assuming I could keep up. And it really is ALL about Mary!
Yeah, yeah, I'll put down the darn twinkies and haul my butt off the couch. Jeeeeez.
I know it is tempting for all to come to Lincoln... (My home town, nothing to brag about! I'm visiting my parents.)
I hate to tell ya we have NO Panera, but there IS a Hardees that sits on the main drag! (HA!)
We could all group up after the run and hang out with the peddlers. It's quite humorous.
They like to either fight for the front seats for the full view of Woodlawn Road OR hang out/lounge on the Hardees front lawn. (My chairs are still there~~ I promise to share.)
Just think... we could all hang with them, yell "JUDAS RULES" to every big rig that has 25 foot tires, bright orange red flaring flames painted down both sides, chrome~~ well plastic exhaust pipes dragging down on the street, license plates that read, "PIGSRLE1" (aka pigs rule 1) with "sexy" Daisy Duke driving with a cig hanging out of her mouth! (This is NOT Jessica Simpson~~ really! It's far from her!!!)
OMG!!! I can hear my loving bro Chuck laughing right now... I KNOW he's thinking, "Hmmmm... did she just describe her ex-boyfriend's car?" WHATEVER CHUCK!!!!
THINK I'M KIDDING? COME TO LINCOLN!!! :):):):) Come and join us Lincoln Railers! :):):) There is DEFINITELY MORE there than good 'ol Abe Lincoln...
she's not lying - they do! And they've pimped out the trucks even more than thaT. But the cops forced all the kids off the main drag - so now they all go party on the country roads. So now you just hear all the baby-boomers in their little white clapboard houses with plastic deer in the front yard next to the blowup Santa's - every time a truck rumbles down Woodlawn Road you hear a faint whisper of 'judas rules....'
And that daisy duke look-a-like, Emily - you promised you wouldn't give away what I do at my second job!
Call me if you're going to the Alley-By tomorrow night, btw (okay - for all you springfield people - it's a bar. by the alley. clever, huh). m
Honey, I've got two parties to go to Friday night so I may not be feeling too good in the morning. Hey, if I can start drinking water by 11:00, I might be up for a run at 8:00 but if I'm having a little too much fun, don't wait for me. If I'm not there by 8:00, I won't be there at all but I really would like to run with you guys so I'll try to be good.
I know. This running thing sure gets in the way of all these holiday parties! On the flip side - keeps us a little healthier right? I would much rather be exhausted from running than a darn headache from too much booze. It's always fun during but the fun is over the next morning when the kids wake at 6am. UGH!!!!!!!!! So start early and end early.
Hey Tim & Wendy, did you get lost in Margaritaville?? Haven't seen you at the Sat. morn. runs or the last couple of socials. Your MIA. Do we need to send the troops out for you?

Hey guys. Kim and I are running 6 miles at 7:30 on Sat. if anyone is interested. I don't know about you but I ate all day today and I need to run!
Made about 100 cookies for a cookie exchange on Sun. and I ate half of them. I've got to get out of the house!

PS. I have a different screen name because our computer crashed last week and now it wont take my old screen name kim n.
Here is a link to the data from my Garmin. It lost the signal downtown at the end so the distance is not accurate.

This should be a link to a Yahoo Photo Album with only a few pictures. I didn't concern myself with taking any and my wife is not really a photographer.
Marathon Pics
Mary
Jeremy,
You have to feel so complete that you have finished your marathon!
Jeremy:
See you later some time down the road.
Mary F.
Good Job!
Stay Warm all!
Kim - When you get a chance forward that Boredom Busters. Maybe that will help until the ice melts. mary@nebo.com or fairclough4@insightbb.com
Thanks!!
Everywhere I go people are saying Merry Christmas. Now I know "it's all about Mary"
Hey anonymous, it's not just Mary Christmas. For many of us folks on this blog, the name of that big long race is spelled "Marython"!
Mary F.
If it's in this month's
Runner's World - I'll get it posted to the blog later tonight.
Here's the link and right now they are offering 20% off (check their home page for the coupon)
MAGNETIC TRAINER
Kim - I'm heading out for Vegas on Friday to run the half marathon on Sunday. Will miss the social. I'll try to locate it on their website.
Thanks for the invite!
Hey Mary-thon Rogers,
You KNOW a Barrython is halfway around Washington Park and then shuffle back to the car for a Twinkies run to Shop 'n' Save!
you're killing me here!
Oh, do they have 'em on sale this week again?
Remember one person's twinkies is another person's wine. Whatever keeps you keeping on keeping strong!
Great job on the 4 1/2 miler - you're closer and closer to your goals with each footstep.
Okay for those of you looking for the article Kim reference regarding boredom busters, go to Runner's World Online and search for boredom busters in the search box. Besides that article - there are so many other really good articles that you might find interesting, especially if you don't get Runner's World in the mail.
BTW - INDY IS NOW CLOSED!
Thanks Mary for the bike info and posting the Boredom Buster site. I am still having a struggle with this computer! Can't wait to get the techy to fix it.
Mary F, have fun in Vegas! That sound much more fun than my house.
Does anyone want to meet Sat. morn. at Panera for a run? How about an 8 miler at 8 am. ?
Headed to Chicago at 9 - or I'd be there.
:-)
Mary
PS: I'm just kidding! I really do love my home town! :):):)
(Well, except for the "Judas Rules" they really DO yell that!)
she's not lying - they do!
Call me if you're going to the Alley-By tomorrow night, btw (okay - for all you springfield people - it's a bar. by the alley. clever, huh).
m
Kim, I'll run from Panera at 8:00. See you there.
Great! How about the trail? I'm open. How about you Pam, are you in?
