What Are YOU Doing?

We're in that limbo time right now. For some of us, we're between the Chicago Marathon (or Memphis Marathon) and the Lincoln Memorial; for others, we've reached the end of the SRRC race season and it's a few months before the Lincoln Memorial begins the next season.

Not to mention the feet of ice and snow we had to put up with before we got our balmy December temperatures this week. It can be hard to push yourself out the door and onto the streets or onto the treadmill or Stairmaster or whatever.

I hate treadmills, but I was using one recently in my attempt to maintain a schedule of running times per week. I've also been making use of the new Nautilus equipment my club has installed, and I'm working on my swimming. Ambitious, you say? A true example for everyone else? HA! I'm just stumbling along trying to keep myself doing something, anything, so I don't get out of the habit of exercising.

Which brings me to my question and the reason for this post. What are YOU doing to keep yourself active? Targeted training or whatever you feel like? Something completely different so you don't burn out or the usual routine? Share your thoughts with your fellow Half Wits!

Barry - does working the cork out of a bottle of wine count as cross training? How about dancing in 4 inch heels?

See, we're always training for something. Great post. For me, it's been learning that I don't have to be training for ANYTHING to lace up my shoes or hop on the bike indoors. Now it's just because it makes me feel strong and in control. I think in keeping up the cardio workouts - regardless of what they are - then when it comes to training for something specific we'll be so much more ready. The base has been established - physically and mentally.

Does anyone know of specific bike/spinning workouts that you can do at home?

Good post Barry! You ARE an inspiration!!!!

Mary - Those cycling classes are killer. I am sure with your creative brain you could put together a playlist that would work for an "at home spin class". At our gym, the instructors just alternate different gears, speeds, standing/sitting, etc. for 45 minutes. Most of the workout is spinning at a moderate tension.
Sometimes they make us sing along with the songs. I'm pretty sure that's optional...

Mary, can't help with the bike workouts. Dave Drennan might though. Sometimes I think he feels more like a biker that needs to be able to run so he can finish Ironman.

Since Memphis I haven't really gotten back into running. I've gone out a few times and it didn't really feel good yet. I don't belong to a club so I don't have the benefit of weight machines or a pool. I have been getting back hitting the heavy bag/speed bag/double-ended bag in my basement. I also have an elliptical machine that I've been on a few times and I'm going to try to start using it more. Its in my basement family room so I can watch TV on my big-screen. I'm also going to try and work in some strengthening workouts that the PT from Dr. Western's office suggested. I also have a 12 yr old treadmill that I can fall back on. Hopefully soon I'll feel better about running so I can take advantage of the good weather.

You should see how great my right elbow looks. It is in great shape doing all the reps. You know reach for cookie on one and up to month on two. The more cookies the better the elbow looks. The only hasard to the exercise is the expansion of the rest of the body.

Robin, you and me both sister! I'm stuffed all the time from X-mas treats. I keep taking food and desserts to work to get rid of them and then I start in. Get home and the same thing happens.

Hey, Kim, Jennifer and I are going to run on Sat. morning from Panera at about 7:30a.m. If anyone is up for a 6-8 mile run, come join us.

Any slow folks showing up Saturday morning?

Ya know, I'm always fascinated by discussions of how people keep themselvs working out. Me, I'm a type 2 diabetic who relies on diet and exercise to control my blood sugar, so I have to do something, anything, five days a week or so. That's why I run or lift or swim or whatever.

But not everyone has the motivation I have. That's why I sooooo fascinated by these discussions.

Barry - we might be too slow for you, but myself, Nancy and possibly a couple of others are running from Panera at 8 on Saturday. Probably 5-7 miles.

If we find another wallet, it's yours!

Been running outside cuz treadmills are boring. Did an 8k last weekend in the snow at Bloomington. Check out the photos at Lake run club site [look in Links].

Speaking of races, other than Lincoln half being March 31 [downtown?]does anyone know the entire SRRC race schedule for 2007??????
Thanks!
Steve

Anne, if you ladies keep finding wallets you're definitely going to make this running thing into a profitable venture.

Anonymous--the latest SRRC newsletter has the tentative 07 race schedule, but they haven't put it on the web site yet.

I won't hold my breath then. Anyone care to post that info?? Thanks!!!

Stephen,

Are you running Sat. morning? We are planning on being there. If you want to run again same pace as last week, I'll run with you.

Ok, I'm pulling a Mary posting twice. New screen and it throws me off.

I'd like to come out and run with you guys, but I think I'm going to take this one off and lay around the house in the morning. This will be the first weekend after Memphis that I've been able to do that. I'll probably run sometime for some distance, but it won't be Sat morning, that's for sure.

Dancing. Definitly dancing. That's my favorite cross training. I went to the Committee Ball at the Hilton last night and danced so much my feet hurt worse today than after the marathon! And so does my head (but that's a whole different kind of problem!) It seems like I'm only getting out to run twice a week as the holidays sometimes get the better of us.

Congrats to Jim Alexander on completing the Las Vegas Marathon - Jim says that his time was a bit slower, but he thinks it was probably the 6-7 miles he walked on the Strip the day before - so we're always learning something!

Jeremy - if you can manage it, there is lap swimming at Eisenhower Pool both during lunch and after work. A 10 punch pass is $25 and it's definately a good workout, especially for recovering those muscles damaged from the marathon. Let me know if you want more information.
