I have had several Half Wits ask me how they should approach this next week leading into the Lincoln Memorial.
As for training, we will take it easy this week. No hills or speed on Tuesday, we'll just do a regular run of 4-5 miles. On Thursday we will cut back the distance to about 3.5 miles. Feel free to run another day or two this week, but keep it easy. I would recommend that you do not run on Friday. Feel free to also do other cross training that you might regulary do, but I would take it easy on that as well and don't start any new training routines.
Try to get plenty of rest this week, especially on Thursday night, as it might be a little tougher for you on Friday night in anticipation of the race. And I would not eat at the Shakey's Super Supper Buffet or something like that on Friday night (but maybe Saturday!).
Packet pick up is Friday evening from 4-7 pm at Athleticare, 3631 S. 6th Street (next to FitClub South). I would encourage everyone to pick up their packets on Friday so you don't have to deal with it on Saturday morning. The race starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, so feel free to sleep in a little as compared to our Saturday training runs. If you picked up your packet on Friday, I would suggest getting to Bridgeview Park by about 8:30 a.m. If you have not picked up your packet, certainly get there earlier.
Hope that helps. Of course, if you are a 1/2 marathon vet and have some advice for our group, please feel free to share.
You guys will do great!

I've seriously neglected this blog for no reason other than I haven't made
the time to sit down and compose something. Which is kind of sad because

If you're a frequent pre-race pee-er like me, you might want to get there a little earlier since the bathroom line is always very looong!
Also, keep in mind that if it's somewhat warmer that day the start is 1 1/2 later than your training runs. And by the time you get done it'll be around 11:00 a.m.
Last year it was so warm that I was tempted to run in my dri-fit underwear! So you might want to come prepared with plenty of layered pieces so you can do a last minute wardrobe change if necessary.
Also, be sure to enjoy yourself! Don't put too much pressure on yourself and you'll have a great run.
Good luck!
Think of the race as one of those workouts in the park where we ran for 8 minutes and turned around. Run faster on the way back in. I went out WAY too hard last year and was running so slow I might as well have been walking.
Don't attack the hils when you come to them, relax into them.
Drink early in the race because by the time you feel thirsty at mile ten the water you drink isn't going to help your dehydration much.
Eat a small meal about two hours before the race and drink about 8 oz of H20 or gatorade 30 - 45 minutes before the start.
Most importantly, go out SLOW! Run the first three easy and the last three hard.
Good luck.

great comments - thanks everyone.
I think its going to take a lot of guts for us virgins to get through the half but we're prepared. Anyone as nervous as me? I'm not worried about getting through it, just worried about getting through it well and without embarrassing myself! And, oh yeah, that whole porta potty thing....
During the longer runs earlier in February, I rearranged all my clothes in my closet and dressers by colors to keep my mind off of how tough the running seemed to be. This really helped, but unfortunately, while it's all organized in my mind - I have no desire to implement any of it.
Disassociation, I think it's called!
