Runner Update's during the Marathon

You can have your family and friends sign up at the website below to receive automatic updates of where you are on the course during the marathon. Might be helpful if you have family and friends there who are trying to keep track of you - they'll get updates via text msg right to their phones, or via email.

Those with you in Chicago can also track you through runner update tents at Grant Park and at all the Starbuck's locations along the route. Be sure to watch your email for news from the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon website.

Just a note ... we tried this last year with my sister-in-law and it didn't work very well. The call/text your cell phone didn't work for alot of people. The runner update checks on the internet with starbucks weren't in real time. So if you're waiting to see someone at mile 18 they could easily pass by when you think they're still a check point or two behind.

What worked for us was saying we'd look for them at a specific mile marker and standing at that mile marker and having the runners look for us. It's much harder to pick one of them out of the crowd.

I was afraid of this. Of course, my husband insists he'll be able to pick me out of the crowd, but I'm thinking he's crazy! He's got a distinctive whistle, so if he sees me, he'll whistle. But by mile 18 - I may not be able to see my own feet much less scan the crowd for him. Maybe the pink tiara will help him find me. I'm planning to pick out one of the Starbucks for him to meet with a cup of coffee and a photo opp. Cause I'm pretty sure I won't do this again - so why not?

What about the grant park updates? They website says it's real time, but doesn't sound like it!

Hey Mary, just have him stand in an unpopular spot. Don't have him stand at the half (The half is very loud and in funnels in and makes a right angle turn.) It is extremely popular there because that's where the passport people are set up. My friend and sister stood right after China Town. It was around 21.5 (This is where you will really need help)and I was able to pick them out. It helped that my friend had a big mouth and I heard her telling a story about her lost cat.

Or Mary, (Barry will like this story!) When I did my marathon last year in Louisville, I carried my cell phone with me in my pocket (surprise!).

Being multi-tasked while running, :):) I called my husband to let him know what mile mark I was reaching. Although Louisville is a lot smaller than Chicago, he was able to meet me at 3 different spots through out the race.

He was with another couple. Brent, my friend Angie Kinney and her husband John. One of the spots they met Chuck and I was at mile 16. Angie jumped in with me and helped finish me out. (THANK GOD!!!)

Another thing we planned was that I knew to "run on the left side" so they could seek Chuck and I out.

Pam is right~~~ it was mile 20 for me when my legs started to feel it. But knowing I only had 6 miles left kept me going, then 3, then the last turn, it was over. It was great to see Brent again at mile 22 to boost my energy, then at the finish. It was nice that he had the video camera and digital to take pictures for memories. The best part of the video was when Chuck and I crossed the finish line.

And since you have been mentioning on the blogs, all these songs that are playing in your head I will forever remember the song when I crossed the 26.2 finish line...

"Hey now your an allstar, get your ganme on go play.... and all that glitter is gold... Only shooting stars break the mold..."

Chuck's was John Denver, "Thank God I'm a Country Boy!" LOL!

(Do you think they have filipino "country boys" in the U.S.? With a hick accent? Hmmmmm... If not, perhaps in the Phillippines?)

I'm laughing out loud - finally! Emily - you need to be in Chicago and jump in at mile, like FIVE with me! Okay - I'll plan on the left side thing and maybe wear a bell around my neck and I'll have to have Troy meet me at a couple spots. AND so funny, I remember getting goosebumps at Indy when I got to mile 13 and I heard Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n Roll" (and yes, Em, I did raise my right arm and pump my fist and sing along - I think it was right past the harley bar where the bikers were giving out beer!). And great - guess what song is now stuck in my head!! I'll have to think about carrying my cell phone - but shoot, the kids will call, and then I'll be like, no, I'm not sending you any money - they have macaroni and cheese in the cafeteria, and if you need bail money - call your dad, and no, you cannot sell the cat to the Schwanz man....

Oh, and great - now I'm picturing Chuck in a cowboy hat - did you have to do that? :-)
