Half Wits 2007

Happy New Year to the Half Wits!

I know everyone is wondering when our 2007 sessions will begin. Well, here you go...

Our first run will be Saturday, January 27, 7:30 a.m. at Panera West. Our first run will be six miles. You have almost four weeks to get to the six mile level, so you should have no problem with this first run.

Leave me your e-mail if you want to be added to the e-mail list.

We will post much more info as we get closer, but feel free to put up a post if you have any questions.

I've only got til the 27th to get up to 6 miles? YIKES!

Time to start training!

Tim, it's great to see the Half Wits gearing up again. Can the blizzards and arctic air be far behind?

LOL!

Count me in Tim. I'll be involved in some way. send info to jpeck@msfwNOSPAMMEDEMAILS.com. I'm sure you can figure out what to remove. Hopefully that will work.

See you then.

PS to the HWGW - I got my registration in for 2007 Chicago. Those of you who were thinking about it, you've got from now to probably May to decide.

Hey Jeremy! I'm signing up for the Marine Corps Marathon and if I don't get it, I want to try Memphis (what do you think about Memphis - good race to run??) - but I'll be training with you guys anyway. I bet Chicago closes before May because it's the 30th anniversay.

I can't do the Lincoln Memorial, but I'll be there helping and cheering all you guys on.

Barry - you're such a hoot - you did 10.4 miles last week, remember? Or did 'da zone' cause you amnesia????? Or was it the six pack of twinkies over New Year's...I did six miles ten days ago - and today?? I'm shooting for three shuffles around the block :) I'm thinking of taking my garmin with me tomorrow... Talk to you soon.

Here's the link to Mad City Marathon Registration is now open.

I thought Memphis was good. The first half was definitely fun. You run together with the half runners for the first 12.5 miles and there was enough runners to make it fun but not overly crowded (about 7500 half and full), plus there was plenty of spectators. There were (Locals I hope) people running the half in Spiderman and Superman costumes, and I saw 2 people running in the white glittery Elvis jumpsuits, complete with sunglasses. You get to run through downtown (Beale St.) and then out to a wooded park by the zoo before you come back to the downtown area. The course goes close to the St Jude childrens hospital (the race is a benefit for them) and near the hospital there were several families holding signs saying thank you for helping their children. There was one family that had a lot of people with them holding several poster sized pictures of a kid named Jack that had been a St. Jude child. He apparently didn't make it but the family was still out to support the race. I remember one guy standing all by himself with a sign. I don't remember what the sign said (perhaps his childs name?) but I do remember him saying "My child is alive because of you."

The second half was not so nice. You end up running through some rundown areas and the spectator support drops off substantially. They did have course entertainment throughout the second half, but there wasn't any crowds. One nice thing was that every mile on the mile were water stops with powerade first then water. And, clocks and at least 3 port-o-potts every mile. There were also complaints I read online of road camber issues with the second half. I noticed that but it didn't make that much of an issue with me. I just ran closer to the cones where it wasn't bad.

When I got done I said that I might come back and run it again, but I wanted to do other races first. Its a great destination race if you have any interest in blues, BBQ or Elvis. Its late enough in the year that you have a good chance of the weather being nice to run in. You just need to be prepared for the rolling hills and I wasn't as prepared as I had hoped. I wanted to take my son to Graceland, but he's a little young to really care that much. He knows who Elvis was and has heard some of his music so I thought it would be cool to take him there. But we were tired and didn't want to be getting home really late so Graceland had to go. Its a Saturday morning race, so if you get down there on Friday you can have Sunday to either recover or do some sight-seeing. There was supposed to be a post-race party not to far from the race finish, but I didn't feel up to going and my family was tired and cold so I went back to my hotel and crashed.

Graceland - hmmmm. Just might have to do that. The image of the man standing there with the sign "my child is alive because of you" gives me goosebumps. Definitely putting that on my "to-do" list.

And I love the blues......Is there really music the whole way? Sounds like a great experience for your first marathon - way to go, Jeremy!

There was course entertainment every 1.5 - 2 miles. It wasn't quite as much as the Rock-n-Roll marathons. They had several actual bands playing various types of music, one place was just a guy playing a guitar and singing, one was an Elvis impersonator singing, a couple were just recorded music playing over a PA system and a couple were groups of cheerleaders / teams cheering. The guy standing there and the family with the posters did get to me. A couple times in the later miles I found my thoughts wandering to that very thing and I almost started tearing up a few times as I thought about what it would be like if my son had to go there.

Jeremy said...

Oh-- I almost forgot about the belly dancers! There were a couple of them on the course as entertainment. And one group of young girls were in a car driving up and down the course at about mile 20-22 cheering from the car with the windows down. I remember them yelling "We - are proud of you - hey, we are proud of you" over and over. They went by me a couple of times.

please put me on your list. alexander3@mchsi.com I'm just thinking of the pounds I have to lose from the Christmas cookies, egg nog, several Christmas buffets, and office snacks. The 6 miles will be easier if I don't have the extra weight to carry.
see you. Jim

Hey Tim, It's good were starting back up. I haven't ran 1 mile since the Chicago Marathon so I need to get my butt in gear. Don't know if I can do 6 miles but will do my best. See everyone on the 27th if not sooner.

Tim, congrats on the new job and welcome back to the blog.

Hey guys - you heard lots about Muddy Buddy from Emily and Chuck and Heather and me from 2006 - and registration for this year's event is now open. It's August 5th (a month earlier) and it does sell out quickly. All you need is a team of 2, an old bike, a clever costume and team name, and the guts to get down and dirty. This is where you discover how adventurous you really are.....

the Muddy Buddy...

When I look at pics from that event, I have to wonder if anyone lost their contact lenses in the mud?

Pam,
I will not be running Sat a.m. My girls have a swim meet in Decatur (warm-ups at 7:00). Kim is gone too. I will be back on the 13th. I am always up for a weekday run. Let me know.

Tim,
Please add me to the list, jennifer@mascopac.com. Thanks

Jennifer

I have contacts - no problem in Muddy Buddy - just gotta keep your eyes closed when you get sucked down by the mud in the pit. Once you start crawling in it, the mud sucks you under! This year will probably be HOT, last year it rained and was freezing. You can drag a camper or a tent up there and camp right on the farm - kinda primitive, but it's the total experience! Go to the website and look up last years results - this gives you an idea of the crazy team names! I'm telling you - this is definitely a party and entries before February 15th are discounted.

Thanks for the heads up Jennifer. Anyone up for a 10 mile run on Sat., 7:30 from Panera?

Jennifer, I start work at 7:00a.m. and I have a very hard time waking up at 6:00 a.m., let alone 5:00 a.m., I'm a wimp, what can I say? I just joined the Fitclub so if you ever want to run on your lunch hour, I can do that. We can run from the Fitclub south and go West.

Oh, I almost forgot, we have been meeting on Tuesday nights at 5:15 in the park. We run anywhere between 4-6 miles. Last Tuesday, we ran to Fitclub West and then did a loop around the park. It was around 6 miles or so.

Hope your girls do well at the swim meet. I'll see ya on the 13th or Tuesday night :).

Oh, and Tim, glad to see you back in action. We won't be able to keep up with you and your new shuffle :).

Barry, I was wondering what took him so long! Darn it!!!

Pamela, I'll run with you Saturday. See you at 7:30.

If anyone wants to join us, we are running Saturday from the Washington Park Shelter.

We will leave at 7:30 a.m. for about 8 miles.

Feel free to come out!

Hi,

I am interested in training for the Indy 1/2. Are the half-wits a training program just for the Lincoln Memorial Half or are there people who are also training and doing the Indy 1/2? Please let me know! Thanks!

The Half Wits program is a short 9 week training program that comprises of running 6 miles as your first long run and progressively goes up. If you feel you can achieve the 6 miles in your first weekend of long run, by all means join us. If not, no problem...you can do what you can and slowly ramp up at your own pace.

Regardless, join us and meet all the cool people in the Half Wits group. You will be pleasantly surprised on the size of this group. Nothing formal. Just runners like yourself crazy enough to run in the cold. Also, many of them will do both races so you wont be alone in your training.

Great! Thank you for the infomation! I will see you guys on Jan. 27th. Not back up to 6 miles yet, but hope to be there by then!

Hey Tim, I know this seems premature, but I am a planner! What will the 6 mile route be? All trail?

Tim said...

Cara:

Depending on the wind, we will probably do one of two routes: 1) out/back on the Wabash Trail, or 2) to Fit Club West and back.

But, hey, you never know for sure!

I meant Jenni G. on the last post!
