Week 4 of 18

We are Marathoners
Do you believe it? Of course you should! This week, make this your mantra - you're putting in lots of miles. You find yourself making sure you're getting in all your scheduled runs. The physical part is a little daunting, but as we head into the longer runs, the mental aspect of training is going to become more and more important. This week - don't just tell people you're training for a marathon, tell them I AM A MARATHONER because after all, there's no doubt in your mind that not only are you going to get to that starting line, you're going to cross the finish line as well. Attitude has everything to do with perception - if we perceive that this journey has already begun and are motivated by the successes we've had up to this point, doubts will be dispelled and any uncertainty we have about the ability to complete these long runs and successfully finish the marathon will start to disappear.

It's going to take guts, though. Steve Prefontaine says: Most people run a race to see who is fastest. I run a race to see who has the most guts." I'm running this marathon to see what kind of guts I have, how about you???

This week calls for two 3 mile runs and one 4 mile run and increases our long run to 9 miles.

Thursday: If anyone is interested, some of us running the 4.25 mile Washington Park to YMCA route.

Saturday: Let's run the "Blizzard 9 miles." For the HalfWits among us, this is the 9 mile route that we ran in a huge snowstorm, except the route is slightly different. Be sure to check out the route on the USATF website. The weather's going to be just a bit warmer than February, so let's beat the heat if we can and plan on meeting at Panera West at 6:30 a.m. There's water at the Fit Club, but it's a good idea to get used to using a fuel belt if you have one.

Week 5 has us running 10 miles and there's a rumor that we're planning to run the Lost Bridge trail and jumping into someone's pool afterwards for a little early morning breakfast pool party - stay tuned for more information - the rumor just might be true! And I should have information on shirts available by the end of the week.

Sounds good Mary. I'll be at Panera, 6:30, with bells on. Don't ask me what that means, my Mom used to always say that.

Couple of questions...What time on Thursday for the Park to YMCA? and I had trouble getting the 9 mile link, I got the previous map again. But, I searched for other maps and got 2. Are you talking about FitClub West to Downtown or Panera/FitClub 9 on the nose?

I fixed the link for Saturday's run - see you all then!

JINDALEE. It's Australian. Find it at Cub's on Veterans. I like the Shiraz, but the others are good, too. It's the best value for the money. It's normally around 5.99 and sometimes it will go on sale! Little Penguin runs a close second, also 5.99 at Cub's but not as good as Jindalee. Pick some up and let me know what you think on Thursday!!

Being the slowpoke of the bunch, I may start out at 6:00 on Saturday, maybe earlier if it's going to be hot. Question for anyone here --- what about fuel belts? I think I may pick one up this week, but need recommendations. Seems like people either love them or hate them. Thanks for any feedback!

Thanks Mary, I'll check them out. The wine recommendations are a nice perk too!

Anne B. I got my fuel belt at Dick's. It is really comfortable to wear. There are 4 - 10 oz. bottles, so I could run forever, or as long as this old body allows. So far, I have run with just two bottles and I have two pockets. It allowed me to carry my cell, keys, and gel. I like it much better than the belt for a single water bottle which jiggles.

I did my 9 miles on Sunday since I'm going to be in Vegas over next the weekend. I'm going to do my 5 miles there. I figured much easier doing 5 on the strip than the 9, especially in the 100 degrees.

Thanks Mary, I'll swing by Dick's tonight and splurge a bit.
Have fun in Vegas --- you should take a camera and get some shots of your 5 mile run on the strip. who knows what you might see?

What I have seen in the past are drunks coming in at 6:00 in the morning who like to give you a hard time. Other than that, it pleasant to run on the strip without going around a big crowd of people.
