If you're headed out of town this weekend, be sure to stick to your training plan and get your long run in.
Thanks to those of you who ran the 5K not only once but twice last Saturday. Running with the group afterwards was so enjoyable!
From The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer:
The following are two thoughts from new runners who completed their first marathon:
- The most challenging aspect of doing something like [a marathon] is learning more about yourself. Running, for me, opens up my mind and allows me to think. I think you find another side of yourself when you actually put your heart into something. Thant is one of the things that makes marathoning special. It is maybe one of the few times you truly appreciate your potential.
- Once the training started, I had mixed feelings about the whole thing. I wasn't sure what I had gotten myself into, but I was excited. Looking back, I don't know how I did it all, but it did put things into persepective. Now I have a more positive outlook in general, a higher operating threshold. If I can run a marathon, I can..........
This week, make a list of 7 reasons you want to train for a marathon or be a long distance runner. When we run our long run on Saturday, focus on one of those reasons in each mile. Oh, and be sure to check out my socks. I bought a new package of running socks and wrote a positive saying on each sock so that each time I pull them on, I will be reminded to focus on the positive experiences each step of the way. It's all about the experiences!
See you Saturday!

I agree with Mary and would prefer to do the Fit Club route. Am loving these inspirational messages that you're posting for the group. The sock idea is great.
Maybe it's been done before, but as I'm pretty new to the whole running scene, I'm wondering if there has been an article in the State Journal-Register about the Half Wits? There is always a blurb about Abe's Army. Just some food for thought on a Monday.
I vote for the Abe's course just because I need hill work, but will be glad to do whatever the group decides.
I think the media blitz is really awesome! Running has exploded in Spfld in the last few years! I can't imagine the paper NOT doing a spread on such a positive piece. So many angles...group support, health issues, mental/physical challenge. Is anyone in the group running for a charity?
By-the-by...thinking group T-shirts would be cool, whether a media story or not. "Half Wits do Chicago"? Hmmm
Just wondering...
I know this is primarily a Chicago Marathon training group? Is there anyone else running different marathons in the fall? I know I wont be doing Chicago, but I am going to train like I am doing a marathon for the fun of it. But hey, if it strikes my fancy, I might sign up last minute at a smaller marathon venue.
Am I sick or what?
No Chuck, you're not sick at all. Just a Half Wit Gone Wild!:=O
You guys crack me up and keep me coming back for more. I'm willing to write up a short blurb about HalfWits, getting input from people who know more than me (like Tim....) and getting it to someone at the paper. HOw cool would it be to have someone follow us....or we could just submit a weekly thing to them if they'd want - with any of us posting their thoughts, experiences. What do you all think?
I can work on it this week and over the weekend. Anyone want to volunteer to be our HalfWits Gone Wild photographer? I'll bring my camera for this Saturday, but I'm sure they'll be some people out of town.
And T-shirts is a great idea, I am not a graphic artist thought. Who'd like to come up with a design?
Sounds like we're going to do Panera to Fit Club, starting at 7am.
Will the Fit Club be open for water, does anyone know?
ummm...Mary, will you be taking butt shots as well?
I would love to volunteer some T-shirt designs! I'm new this year to the group and haven't met anyone yet because of the Scholastic Race last Saturday. So, tell me...since we are going (mostly) for Chicago this year, and its marathon (not half) is the group sticking with "Half Wits gone Wild?" I'm picturing some great Chicago themed illustrations in my head....what do you guys think?
I ran it last year and the one landmark that sticks out in my mind is Chinatown. Chinatown is at about the 21st mile marker. It's the last big thing I remember until I hit Mt. Everest at 25 1/2 miles (It was a big hill that nobody told me about, I'm sure if I went back, it wouldn't be as big as I thought it was at the time.) Oh, and there are male cheerleaders at mile 8. They looked so good that I really thought some of them were woman, lol. Maybe it was too much GU, lol.
Would anyone like to meet earlier than 7:30 on Sat to run extra miles or possibly keep going at the end for a few more?? Looking to do around 10-11, if anyone wants to join me??
Mary R - love the journal idea! We'll need a pic of Barry in his cheerleader outfit, complete with poms. Might be a job for Photoshop...also, be sure to get a shot of your big blister!
Mary F - we should print ALL comments!!!!!
Jenni - I would love to join you, but I run at the speed of a tortoise.
