How is Everyone??

Bad, bad night.

As I write this at 2:45 am, CWLP is clearing a tree that was blocking 5th Street in front of our house across from the south entrance to Lincoln Park. It was hard to see the tree for southbound traffic on 5th and I saw a van run into the tree earlier in the evening (of course the guy was going like 45 MPH.)

That weather that hit at 8:30 or so was scary. Wendy and I went to the basement and I went back upstairs to grab some batteries for the radio. When I did that, the wind was shaking the house and it sounded like a loud rumble outside. Amazingly we did not really get that feeling in the basement and luckily it seems like no damage to our house. Honestly, that is the first time I have ever really been scared due to weather in my life. Our power went out at 8:30 and came back on at 2:20 AM.

I hope everyone survived this OK. It's going to take everyone pulling together to get through this.

So, how is everyone?

I can't believe that I used to get excited about weather like this! I guess owning a house and having friends in the path of the storm tempers that a bit. Chatham was okay, the north-east side anyway, but as I was driving to work at Koke Mill Med. Center today I had to take Archer Elevator Rd to Old Jacksonville because Veterans was backed up quite a bit. There were telephone poles toppled along Archer Elevator and I saw at least two houses that had been hit. One was grazed by a pole and one had it's roof caved in. Power is on out here at Koke Mill as of 0800 hrs but power was out from Woodside Rd. as far up as Wal-Mart when I got off Veterans.

I worked 3p-11p last night at St. John's.{Actually I left a lot later than that!!) We were without power in the rooms for a while. The patient doors were shaking. It was really something. I live by Archer Elevator Road and driving home at 1:00am in the pitch black was something else. We are a couple of streets west of Archer elevator and we had power restored at 4:00am. West of Archer is still without power. I pray you are all safe.

I hope everyone is okay. My family fared really well. We got trapped in the Sacred Heart Griffin building (watching Fiddler on the Roof) for an hour or so. Our house was unscathed, and our power came back on around two this morning.

By the way, what was the wreakage hanging from the power line in the Panera picture?

Stay safe...

I drove by Panera this afternoon. That is some kind of tarp that is caught in the wires...like a tarp over one of the garden centers or something. If you look at the ground under that tarp, you can see a huge part of a roof or siding rolled up. The picture does not do it justice.

We fared fine in Lincoln, but our house was shaking. Power was out at work all day (had to clean out 'fridges and toss out food!), but had a couple of help desk computers. No damage to our building, but the downed transformer started a small fire that was quickly put out.

I heard Washington Park had a lot of debris down. We still on for tomorrow?

Home fared fine although I'm glad I didn't have to sleep in my unfinished basement! Had some serious damage to our roof at work, a group of employees showed up and pitched in doing what they could. The top of the building looked like a sardine can being peeled open. Lots of daylight and water everywhere. Everyone from the employees to the contractors have been great, pitching in and doing what is needed. Reminds me of the Half Wits! Hope all are safe and sound, buildings can be fixed. There were lots of branches at Washington Park this morning, it was dark when I came home so i don't know if it's all cleaned up or not, they are usually pretty good about it because there are so many old trees there.
