Sore Subjects

OK, you have run 11 miles and you might have noticed a few, shall I say, problems.

A little chaffing between the legs or under the arms?
Boys: those nips a little tender?

Well, here's your advice column.

First, for any type of chaffing or rubbing issue, I highly recommend Body Glide (available at the Running Center). The packaging looks like deodorant, but it is a stickier consistency. It works wonders on areas that rub together. Just glide it on and enjoy.

And gents, listen up. I do not like bloody nipples! It is a common sight at longer distance races to see this problem in action. I have a photo I could use to demostrate, but I will save you all from that image.

This is a painful and embarrasing problem, but there is an easy and inexpensive answer: Band Aids. More specifically, the small "dots" bandages. These fit nicely and certainly do the trick. There is also a product call "Nip Guards" which I have never tried but have seem them at expos. They seem to be thicker than Band Aids, and more expensive.

So, does anyone have any other advice for running "problems"? Gals, any advice for your fellow female runners? Any products you have found that help during those long runs?

Any advice for ugly toenails? I'm am going to lose my second toe nail. Are there like "rubbers" for your toes.

Hey Mary, I think most black toenails come from shoes being too small, but check this story from Jeff Galloway on the subject:

Any other advice runners?

Don't wear two pair of socks. That can cause black toenails, especially when it is cold.

When I started running the best advice was to buy my shoes 1 size larger. I have noticed no nail, blister or foot problems.I wear on cold days 2 pair of socks, thin but comfotable.

To prevent problems w/ your feet, I recommend applying Vaseline between and around your toes and the bottom and arch of your feet. This works very well. Guys can also use it on their nipples to prevent problems w/ their shirt rubbing.

Mary:
There are "rubbers" for your toes. I think they call them toe caps. I've seen them in the Road Runner Sports catalog and one their on-line site.

I do think you should try a larger shoe though. I wear a 7 or 7.5 in street shoes and my running shoes are 8.5. I had a hard time accepting that I needed those big shoes, but my feet are much happier now. (Guys, it's a woman thing. Big feet don't translate into anything good for women.)

Because we're all individuals, you really have to experiment with different solutions. I agree with Scott about Vaseline for the feet, but in my experience, Bodyglide is the only thing that prevents the bleeding nipples (which sounds like something out of a Monty Python sketch). I wish Vaseline would work, since it's cheaper than Bodyglide, but painful experience tells me otherwise.

vaseline on your face is good on cold windy days to help with windburn, too.
