I know for many of the Half Wits the 11 miles this weekend will be the longest you have ever ran. I also know many of you think this might be a big jump.
You can do this! Don't get yourself psyced-out beforehand. Eleven miles is not that much more than nine miles, which is not that much more than seven, which is only one more than the six we ran the first week. It's just a gradual increase.
Let's hear from some of our half marathon veterans with some encouragement and advice for some folks who might be worried about the long run this week!

Way to go half wits! You are amazing. Your progress has been steady and you will do fine on the 11. I was very sorry I couldn't join you Saturday! I've run 3 half marathons and I think if you can run the Arctic Amble in those conditions and the 9 we did in the snow the week before you can do anything!
It is terrific to have such a great group to train with.

For me, when it gets longer than an hour of running, music helps motivate me - especially that last couple of miles.
Also, I think it's helpful to think of the run in segments rather than in total.

Hey you guys. I just want you to know that Barb is right, if you can run 9 miles in that cold wind, you can run 11 in less harse conditions. Wendy also makes a great point, a lot of running is mental. If you break your run up into segments, just tackle one segment at a time, it won't seem so overwhelming. Also, I plan on bringing more cookies to panera. Don't worry, you will have burned off enough calories for one or two!!

You can do it!!! It all in your mind. Remember when you first started to run, you thought running a block was a long way, then a mile. You got confident so you took on your first 5k. Hey you thought to yourself, that wasnt to bad. All the sudden you have a new mental outlook about running distances. Before you know it, your training for Abes Amble. One of the more challenging 6 mile courses you will ever run. You survived the run...Congratulations.
Now with this group, you have the opportunity to break down another mental barrier...Running a half marathon.
You started at 6, 7 then 9 miles, then the ARCTIC FARTLEK (Abes Amble Frozen Course)...that wasnt so bad was it. Your survived. Why stop now!!! 11 miles is nothing!
Keep moving forward and you'll complete your goal.
Running is a mental game, conquer it and I'll see you at the Marathon Line.
