The Arctic Amble, Saturday 2/18

Half Wits: don't forget! We are running the Abe's Amble course this Saturday (Feb. 18) for our long run. This is the inaugural Arctic Amble 10k. Who knows, maybe it will be a race some day.

Our plan has us cutting back to 6 miles this week, so I thought this would be a good way to put in those miles. Most training plans for half and full marathons call for running a few weeks of increasing distance then cut back for a week to a shorter distance. This is in an effort to aid in recovery and hopefully reduce injuries. That is why we cut back this week.

The start of the Abe's Amble course is adjacent to the State Fair Grandstand. Both the Main Gate and Gate 11 (8th Street by Ag Department) are open this time of year. I will put water by the entrance to Oak Ridge Cemetery. If you are not familar with the course or have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with me.

Kirsten:

We have a wide range of pace in the Half Wits. There are about 90 people who are participating in the program, so you are bound to find someone who runs at your same pace. For our long runs, we just show up and get running and everyone seems to settle in at their pace along with some other folks.

The group is has a majority of female runners, and many for many of the participants this will be their first 1/2 marathon.

We meet on Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. for our long runs from the west-side Panera, except for this week when we will run the Abe's Amble course. Last week we ran nine miles. This week we cut back to 6. Next week we will run 11.

On Tuesday and Thursday nights we meet at the Washington Park shelter (near the playground) for hills/speedwork (Tuesdays) and runs of 30-60 minutes (Thursdays).

The 1/2 marathon we are training for is the Lincoln Memorial Classic, which is on April 1, 2006. The course is south of Lake Springfield and east of Chatham.

Feel free to give me a call if you would like to talk about it. My home number is 217-544-5799

Half Wits: please tell Kirsten about how the program works and your initial concerns (or lack of) regarding pace.

Thanks for your interest!

Hi Kirsten

I've never done a half before and am looking forward to this challenge. I run a 10-12 minute mile pace, depending on distance and am one of the ones near the back of the pack too. There is a lot of variety in the pace in our group, but the main goal is to complete the 1/2 and to be part of an awesome group. Hope you can join us.
