-15F windchill? Yes, we ran!

Welcome to the Arctic Amble!

That's Tom Apke just after he finished the 10k Abe's Amble course today for our inaugural Arctic Amble. Yes, that is ice. No, he was not the only one who looked like that.

After the blizzard conditions of last Saturday and the horrible temps and windchill today, our Half Wits are ready for anything.

I am not one to question anyone's sanity, especially since I am responsible for this little adventure, but there really has to be something a little off with people who run in conditions like this. I think this group of Half Wits will be going down in the running lore of the Springfield Road Runners Club..."I remember that year when it snowed a foot and was 20 below, but we still ran!?

I apologize for the spigot on the water jug being frozen this morning. Hazards of the job I guess!

So, what did y'all think today? And what about you wimps who did not show up today?

I absolutely loved it. I've wimped out too many times the last two years or so, not going out in the snow or the cold or the wind. Today's run on the Abe's Amble course was great!

Besides, after being in Abe's Army last summer when we ran the course at 6 pm in 90 degree heat and 90 percent humidity, today was just the other end of the thermometer!

Gee, what's NEXT Saturday gonna be like?

Today was insane. I would have never done it on my own, that's for sure! I would have done an easy five on the treadmill if it weren't for this nutty group - which I'm proud to be a member of!!

I feel like a true nitty gritty runner now!

When I found a frozen layer of sweat lining my jacket I declared myself a TrueHalfWit!!! It is awesome!! What a great group to say "I Belong"

I wish I wasn't at work today, looks like it was a fun time. I've never run Abe's, I've only lived in the Springfield area about 2 1/2 years, but I was at the 3 mile water stop for Abe's this year thinking I was glad that I volunteered to hand out water instead of run the race in those conditions.

JS,PW and TP, and the rest of the Half Wits, kudos for running this morning. I thought of you all when I woke up. I wish I could have been there but my injury is hampering me. You all are truly earning your Half Wit running shoes.

Hey Matt: at least the butt of your tights was not a solid chunk of ice like someone else;-)

What would be the best sock to wear when it is that COLD? The netting in my shoes lets alot of air in, nice in the summer but chilly in the winter.

I wore two pair of socks yesterday: the pair on the inside was a Pearl Izumu pair that was thinner. The outside pair were Wright Socks, which actually are double-layered socks. My feet did not seem to get cold until after I stopped running and was standing around.

There are running shoes made for cooler weather...the Nike Air Pegasus Storm comes to mind. Many trail shoes are also better for cold weather than regular running shoes. Most of these shoes have more material on the upper of the shoe in an attempt to keep out water and to keep the feet warmer.

As I've been "cutting back" to rehab my overworked IT band most Saturday's I'm pouting that I'm not out there training yet. But I must say, it's been quite convenient to miss the blizzard and the big chill. It's pretty sad to be jealous of you all running out there in a shaken-up snow globe.

Hope to join you all next week as I start my 10 week training program for Indy.

Y'all could have been walking in Chicago, where it was 14 below zero at 11:00 at night with a "Wicked" wind coming off the lake. Okay, I wasn't running, but I was freezing parts of me that shouldn't have been freezing and I have sore muscles worse than had I run! Sorry to have missed the Artic Abe's - I'm sure I got my 6.2 over the last few days!
